What is the Rosary?
The Rosary is a beautiful and powerful praying tool. It is a Catholic tradition that has been around for centuries used to praise and honor Jesus. The idea behind a Rosary is to pray through the Virgin Mary, Jesus' holy Queen Mother, also known as Our Lady. She has always been there with her son during his life on earth. The word "rosary" comes from the Latin word for dew, which is rosarium. It is said in the order, with five sets of ten 'Hail Marys' and one 'Glory Be to the Father', which equals 50 prayers altogether. With the hail holy Queen, we ask Jesus' holy Mary mother for help with her prayer.
Praying the holy rosary is one of the most popular Catholic devotions. It's a great way for people who don't know how to read scripture or those who can't read at all.
What are the beads for?
A rosary is a string of beads, usually made from glass or wood. With the beads, you count the prayers and meditations. The rosary is broken into five groups called decades, with ten beads each. As we pray through the beads, we put our attention on certain events of Jesus' life and Passion which are called Mysteries.
Mystery and Meditation
In the rosary, we pray one decade and meditate on a mystery before proceeding to the next decade. The repetition of the prayers assists in this prayerful meditation. The rosary is about contemplation and reflection on Jesus' life. It's a prayer to meditate on different aspects of his holy life and his agony in the garden.
As you pray and reflect on its meaning, you'll find that it's not only a really powerful praying tool for peace-making and contemplation. But also an excellent way to ground yourself when life feels chaotic.
How to pray the Rosary?
What do you need? The rosary does not require any special materials or tools. A rosary, you usually buy ready-made. You start at the cross with a sign of the cross and the Creed. At the large bead, pray an Our Father and a Hail Mary at each of the next smaller beads. At the next large bead, pray a Glory be to the Father, announce and reflect on the first mystery, and pray an Our Father.
This is followed on the wreath by five times ten smaller beads (for the Hail Marys) and one large one set apart from them (for the Our Father and Glory be to the Father).
As we pray the rosary we meditate on the events of Our Lord's life and Passion, which are called Mysteries. Every day of the week is assigned a mystery to focus on. The Joyful Mysteries (Monday and Thursday Rosary), The Sorrowful Mysteries (Friday and Tuesday Rosary), and the Glorious Mysteries (Wednesday, Sunday, and Saturday Rosary). Each mystery is divided into sets of five.
Pope John Paul II recommended praying the Rosary on as follows: the Joyful Rosary on Mondays and Saturdays, the Luminous Mysteries on Thursdays, the Sorrowful Rosary on Tuesdays and Fridays, and the Glorious on Wednesdays and Sundays. Sundays during Advent and at Christmas are excluded. Also the Sundays of Lent, when the sorrowful is prayed.
Praying the holy Rosary according to the Order of Preachers is relatively rare. Here one prays as in the Roman Catholic way of prayer, except for the introductory prayers, which are based on the opening prayers of the Liturgy of the Hours.
How often should you pray the Rosary?
The great thing about this prayer is that there is no set frequency for how many days in a row you have to pray it. You can pray it every day if you want. What is recommended, according to the Bible, is regular prayer without ceasing. For this purpose, the Rosary is excellent. Believers like to pray the rosary before Holy Mass and kneel before the tabernacle.
